Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. The butterfly wings used within our jewellery are genuine specimens that have been ethically and sustainably sourced from reputable suppliers, butterfly farms, research collections, and displays. Each specimen is carefully preserved and transformed into wearable art designed to celebrate the beauty of the natural world.
-
Yes. Due to the natural variation found within butterfly wings, shells, botanicals, stones, and other natural materials, no two pieces are ever completely identical. Each item is individually handcrafted and features its own unique colours, patterns, and markings, making every piece truly one of a kind.

All butterfly specimens used by Courtney Zara Natural Designs are sourced ethically and responsibly from reputable suppliers, sustainable butterfly farms, and private collections. Many of the butterfly farms our specimens come from operate as conservation ventures, supporting local communities while encouraging the protection and restoration of natural habitats through the cultivation of native host plants rather than land clearing for agriculture.
Some specimens are donated from completed research projects, collections, and preserved displays, allowing these remarkable insects to continue inspiring appreciation for the natural world through art rather than being discarded. As a zoologist and conservationist, it is important to me that every specimen used within this business is obtained legally, sustainably, and with genuine respect for the ecosystems and species they come from.

Like all jewellery, natural oils, dirt, and everyday wear can gradually affect the appearance of your pieces over time. To keep your jewellery looking its best, gently clean it regularly using a soft lens cloth and a mild jewellery or glass cleaning spray.
Avoid abrasive materials or harsh chemicals, as these may scratch or damage the protective surface of the jewellery. Never use isopropyl alcohol to clean your product.

Not at all. While butterfly wings themselves are naturally delicate, each piece is carefully designed and constructed to be durable, protective, and made for long-term wear.
Over years of refining the design process, I’ve focused on creating jewellery that not only preserves the beauty of these specimens, but is also strong, reliable, and made to last. While we still recommend treating every piece with care, they are created to be far more durable than most people expect.
-
With proper care, your jewellery is designed to last a lifetime. Each piece is sealed with a specialised jewellery-grade protective coating to help prevent oxidation and discolouration of the copper.
If this protective layer becomes heavily scratched or damaged over time, some natural ageing or colour change of the copper may occur.
-
Yes. Any natural materials personally collected for use within our collections — including sand, leaves, moss, shells, and botanicals — are gathered responsibly, legally, and in small quantities with respect for local environmental regulations and ecosystems.
-
Each piece is individually handcrafted and takes many hours to complete, from preparing and preserving specimens through to constructing and finishing the final jewellery setting. Pricing reflects the time, craftsmanship, ethical sourcing, materials, and one-of-a-kind nature of each design.
-
The natural colours within butterfly wings are remarkably stable and are protected within the jewellery design. To maximise longevity, we recommend storing your jewellery away from prolonged direct sunlight and harsh environmental conditions when not being worn.
-
While the jewellery is sealed and designed to be highly durable, we recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to water, perfumes, chemicals, and excessive moisture where possible in order to preserve the finish and longevity of each piece.
